Fog & White-out in New Hampshire
09/01/2008

It was a truly strange night in New Hampshire.

I spent it broadcasting live on Sky News in an eerie, swirling mist against a dazzling snowbank.

A fog and a white-out – and that just about sums up what happened at the Primary ballot here in this New England state.

At the end of it we were left just as confused and surprised as when we started.

Two big comebacks – Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

Barack Obama still in the race big time. And an air of confusion about the Republicans.

Firstly we were all fooled by the voters. They appeared to have told the pollsters one thing and then gone and voted another way in the booth.

I suspect even the Clinton team was stunned. I know they’d been preparing to put a positive spin on second place right up until early last evening.

You couldn’t mistake the amazed grin on Bill Clinton’s face as he watched his wife make her victory speech.

Why? Well maybe that teary moment the day before made her seem “more real” as some voters told me.

Or maybe the voters of New Hampshire are just saying :” Hey! Slow down. Don’t get carried away. We need to see more of you guys before we finally make up our minds.”

After all the big election isn’t until November 4th and no-one’s ready to crown the King or Queen quite yet.

So as the fog of New Hampshire cleared today what do we know for sure.

Well the Democrats seemed to have sorted out that it’s either Hillary or Barack Obama they want. But they need more time to assess them.

Obama still has a Wow! factor and can appeal across party lines. But he needs to get out more of the new, young voters.

While Hillary seems to have struck a chord with the traditional, core Democratic supporters. Now she just has to work on that ‘human touch’ angle.

As for the Republicans, what’s clear is that they’re still not clear at all. McCain looked a safe bet to NH voters after the Huckabee upsurge in Iowa. But next time it could be Romney or Giuliani.

But at least they still have time. Remember there are 48 more states and ten months to go!
