A zoo in China that feeds live animals to its tigers - which are then killed and eaten in a twice-daily public spectacle - has been condemned by welfare campaigners.
Visitors to the zoo in Harbin, in eastern China, can buy chickens, sheep, cattle and ducks for feeding time.
Then on a special 'excursion' tourist buses circle the Siberian tiger enclosure, as they 'prey' is let loose.
Sky News China correspondent Peter Sharp witnessed the spectacle:
I would like to think that the Chinese tourists on the bus heading into the wildlife park at Harbin had no idea what was to come.
The families, some with young kids, were chatty and excited as we passed through the electric sliding gates and razor wire into a barren expanse of what looked like a brown-fill site.
But every one on the bus knew exactly what we were there for.
The 15 seater tourist buses had their windows and sides stripped away and replaced with iron cages. Within minutes, the Siberian tigers, standing tall on their back legs, were looking at us through the bars; eye to eye and waiting.
The driver produced a chicken from a basket. One of the visitors handed over the equivalent of £2.60 and within seconds the screeching bird was stuffed down a vending flap straight into the mouth of a waiting tiger."
[Click here for Sky News Online's full story]
The bus moved on to a spot above a makeshift waterhole where gamekeepers in a heavily caged four-wheeled drive released half a dozen white ducks (£6.50 each). They fluttered down to the waiting tigers who were knee deep in the water.
"It's behind you," the people on the bus shouted, as one canny duck, trying to escape the beast, surfaced behind the tiger.
Cheers rang out as the tiger finally caught up with the duck.
The excursion, which costs £3, is repeated twice a day. But what really attracts the crowds is the main course.
The spectators can buy a live sheep for £40; a pheasant costs £6.50, while cattle are £100 each.
The buses formed a circle around the tigers as a blue truck made its way through the gate.
The vehicle parked among the tigers, and the hydraulic ramp tipped out a fully grown domestic cow.
The animal landed on its feet and was immediately brought down. But it was a slow kill. The cow was still alive ten minutes after it was taken, as five tigers feasted on the animal.
Sky News phoned authorities at the wildlife park - the biggest Siberian tiger breeding establishment in the world - to find out why domestic animals are being made to suffer like this. The company refused to take our call.
Victor Watkins, wildlife advisor, with WSAP, said: "This is totally abhorrent. Zoos should never feed live animals to zoo animals.
"It is cruel, unnecessary and reminiscent of the Roman arena. We're not only concerned about the welfare of the animals themselves but also the effect on the spectators who regard such cruelty as entertainment."

You know, in reading all of this talk about how we in the west shouldn't be so hypocritical when peering in on other cultures, I've noticed a staggering amount of people who seem to think that westerners are not already IN the process of cleaning their own closets. ALL zoos and circuses and bullfights need to be better monitored, humanely updated, or shut down. Just because we don't like the cruelty shown in these Harbin videos IN NO WAY means we are ignorant of similar shameful behaviour in our own country. To those of you who defend the traditions of the Chinese in this particular case, and the sadly obvious enjoyment it brings to the people, please be aware that activism against the treatment of animals in circuses and zoos all over Europe and North America has been ongoing for DECADES. To criticize the Chinese in this example is absolutely appropriate: it's their TURN to have their practises scrutinized if they really want to play with the rest of the world. Criticism is a healthy part of democracy, and though Chinese officials may wish we'd just keep our noses out of their business, they are GOING to have to deal with this. Most developed countries have BEEN THROUGH THIS ALREADY and are continuing to face scrutiny over inhumane practises not unlike those featured here (including the British fox hunts!). Success against these things is always hard won, if it's won at all, but claiming people of one culture should just ignore the shameful practises of another because they don't "understand" that culture, is frankly ridiculous.
Incidentally, I wonder how many of the tourists in the video clips have been to Shanghai's wonderful Fake Disneyland, complete with flagrant, unlicenced characters from not only Disney cartoons, but several trademarked Japanese shows as well.
And we're supposed to be worried about their burgeoning middle class when it's built on lies and fakes?

I find that the chinese people are absolutely barbaric with no feelings. I know that it is probably the way that they were brought up but that is no excuse.
I will never visit their country as that would be supporting them. Its also a shame that so much stuff that we buy is made in China. I find how they treat animals very upsetting indeed.
Posted by: Zoe Hamilton, Aylesbury 19 Jun 2007 12:23:01
I think the point is being missed here somewhat. The tigers are being fed live cows to entertain tourists, not because they are hungry. I'm sure in the report it was said that the tigers were overweight and once they had killed the cow they didn't bother to eat it. Personally I think all zoos are barbaric and don't visit them and this report has justified and strengthened my feelings.
Posted by: Tracey, Northampton 14 Jun 2007 16:35:50
I see nothing at all wrong with this. Those that do I find hypocritical and silly. It's a cow. The tigers need to eat. So it is better to cut their throat 'backstage'? Eat your beef, your chickens, wear your leather...and call this barbaric. It's how tigers eat. It's how your domestic dog eats too...oh wait you all have someone else kill their meat for them and package it in cute bags and process it until it's unrecognizable as an animal. Silly pc world we live in nowadays.

I was so apauled to see this barbaric, horrific, disgusting and totally unnecessary treatment of these poor defenceless animals in the name of entertainment. Mothers, fathers and children all laughing at the sight of these defenceless animals being mauled to pieces slowly and painfully. Then I wonder to myself why is the world a sad depressing place with torture all around us? Can it ever change? It can't when the Chinese condone these sorts of behaviour. We - the West - cannot compare ourselves to these barbaric monsters of individuals when we say that some people in the west still support fox hunting for example. We don't do such things in our zoos or anywhere else for that matter. Moreover it is only a small percentage of us who still participate in fox hunting and other blood sports. I believe that all aninal cruelty is unnecessary and it is only through education and educating our children that this can change. Unfortunately for the Chinese this will not happen - well not in my lifetime at least because they are a race of barbaric, heartless individuals. Vote with your wallet and voice and please try not to purchase anything from China and please do not travel there until these sorts of animal tortures are stopped for good.

It has been interesting to read this blog - especially comments from Will and Nicholas Tsun (see below). I have lived in London half my life. I now live in Beijing. China and England have completely different cultures and mindsets. I do not condone cruelty in any form to either animals or humans, and there are shocking examples of both all over the world. However I don't feel that I'm in a position to pass judgement as to whose society is more cruel and barbaric or (God forbid) 'better'. We are all different. All of us can make positive changes in our own lives to make the world a better place.
-----------------------------
I agree that the images are horrific - however I also feel there should be a debate over zoos generally ! With respect to these tigers, they are predatory creatures who, in the wild, kill live prey. Is it not cruel to feed them processed, dead food - unlike that which they are conditioned to eat in their natural environment ? I feel the problem is more one of cultural taste ! We, in the UK, like our chickens to run around free - but when we buy them in the supermarket, they must not resemble chickens at all - our palates can tolerate pink flesh served in blue polystyrene trays but the outrage caused by seeing a chicken's head in shrinkwrap would be massive. We should tolerate other's cultures, and understand that although we have a value set which includes being kind to fluffy mammals - whereas the Chinese do not ! Its a bit hypocritical when some of us enjoy Lobster (Killed during Cooking) Oysters (Killed during opening) and Fois Gras (An appalling abuse of Geese !)
Should we Judge ?

Who can blame the Chinese for treating their animals so badly? You can hardly expect them to grant animals a level of humanity that millions of people do not even enjoy. There is not much harm in drawing attention to the plight of China's animals, but it is does Sky no credit to paint ordinary Chinese people as brutish. Imagine showing this report to a Chinese person who had just been told that cock fighting and fox hunting are among Britain's oldest and most traditional sports, and that the Spanish slaughter bulls for entertainment. He would probably think the reporter was a hypocritical bigot. I would have to agree with him. Sky's reporting is presented in such an unbalanced and xenophobic fashion that it is impossible for viewers not to be provoked into a racist apoplexy, as I presume they intended. Of course, an important facet of this -- completely ignored by the report -- is the vast gulf between the subsistence, rural lifestyle of most Chinese and the urban, pre-packaged sensitivities of the modern British person. Take a look from the other side of the fence and imagine, for example, how shocked a poor Chinese farmer would be to see the opulent, wasteful existence of most people in Britain. Feeding livestock to tigers seems mind-numbingly trivial in comparison to the relentless destruction of the planet that is being perpetrated by Britain and the world's other rich countries. Why not scream blue murder about the mistreatment of China's people, instead of its animals...? Who's really being inhumane here???

After seeing this footage myself and my family have canceled our holiday to this revolting, barbaric country and I would really like to see the Australian Olympians do the same thing. As for any comments saying animals kill animals, the report stated that in the wild the tigers would be hungry and therefore kill quickly and certainly not take 10 minutes plus to do it. The enjoyment displayed by those watching was absolutely disgusting and the level of racism in the world no longer shocks me with examples of such uncivilized behavior. I would like this footage to be seen everywhere all the time as I do not think enough people are aware that this cruel entertainment really happens. There are many terrible things happening in the world but this is preventable, my question is where do they get the cows??? China should be treated as they treat animals with no respect, boycott China completely and tell everyone to do the same. A week after seeing this necessary report I am still outraged, if there is anything at all to be done lets do it.

Again this suffering truly shows how animals in today's 'modern' society are being horrible treated. From China to here in Europe animals fair out no better in laboratories, slaughterhouses for meat consumption or even in the circus. Kind and compassionate people everywhere dont want to be part of this cruelty and everyone can make a difference in their own back yards for animals just like those suffering in China.

As a westerner living in China, I have seen many examples of blatant disregard for human and animal life. For those of you asking what can be done to end the animal suffering, please write to your national government officials urging them to address the issue with China and also write to the Chinese ambassador in your country and tell them that you and others like you will not support the 2008 Olympics unless the inhumane activities cease.

I have been asked what people can do. There are 3 things that anyone can do:
1. Write a polite well-worded letter to the Chinese Ambassador of your
country requesting that his country enacts an Animal Cruelty Law. Do not use
bad language or racial slurs or threaten boycotts. He is duty-bound to pass
on to the relevant authorities opinions expressed to him. With such a law,
local Chinese animal protection organisations will have the tools to fight
these atrocities.
2. Make sure that your country's own house is in order - are any animals in
your country being exploited and subject to severe stress? It is much more
effective if one can talk from a moral highground.
3. Write to your own Government to ensure that the next CITES meeting will
not allow trade in tiger body parts. That is really what these tigers are
all about. They are being bred with the hope that big money can be made
from them when the ban on trade is lifted. Support the organisations that
are fighting to keep the ban.

If a society can deny brutal purges which has resulted in murder of few dozen millions of their grand-parents; how much problem you think it may have about feeding live animals to pet 'Tigers'. Hold you breath; if CCP permits; soon they can be feeding counter-revolutionaries, cult members & terrorists (read Tibetans & Ugyurs); if rest of world keep bending as it does today.

I have chosen not to watch the footage either. After so much media on this issue, there needs to be a link or website to the millions of people who have been effected by this cruelty to make a donation or support in any way. Use this footage as a means to try and eliminate this problem. I also will never make a trip to China or watch the Olympics and if the majority of us do this - this will send a message (its little things like this which will make a difference). I feel bad for the decent Chinese people who actually are against this kind of behaviour to animals. They all are becoming branded as a barbaric nation of people.

I feel really bad about how Chinese zoos treated the poor animals, such as raise them in the places look like a prison and training them horrified to do the terrible performance. But the tiger part, I don't think it's such a big problem. Feeding domestic animals to tigers is a way to protect the wild nature of the tigers, i think it's good for the tigers.

This shows a very selfish people where morals and respect are completely absent.
The poor humiliated cow was put in a completely unnatural arena, so that its gruesome death could provide entertainment.
I wonder if the same people would laugh as much if they switched place with the cow.
The tiger will probably be chopped up for medicine too!
Some serious educating needs to be done here.

I have just witnessed news footage of feeding live animals to overweight tigers in China for the entertainment of so called human beings. I agree that this footage should be broadcast as often as possible to show the world of these horrendous and barbaric acts. The problem lies with the Chinese authorities but it is down to us by totally banning Chinese imports and boycotting the forthcoming Olympics. If any athlete is worth his salt he or she would refuse to go and each and every shopper decline Chinese products. On a larger scale multi national companies should stop investing in China as a manufacturing base and civilised governments totally ban Chinese products. Of course they wont because it is all about money and it is up to us Jo public to lobby and make our feelings known through the ballot box. Come on public let's do something about it.

After watching this footage on Sky News tonight, I can say that I am seriously disturbed. It sickens me to think that people enjoy going to these zoos and witnessing the suffering of innocent animals. The image of a chicken being stuffed through the flap and then grabbed by the tiger was heartbreaking, and very shocking to see. Couldn't they feed the animals prepared meat which has already been killed like zoos in the UK do? I am glad that Sky News have captured this kind of footage for people to see, as maybe it will open the public's eyes and force them to do something, but at the same time, I am worried that nothing will be done. I have nothing against zoos where the animals have a large habitat to live in, are looked after and where there is no cruelty (eg feeding live animals to tigers or crocodiles etc). I hope other readers can understand what I'm talking about, and agree with me. Stop animal cruelty. After all, how would you feel if you were flung into an enclosed area, and attacked by several tigers for several minutes?

I thought this was a shocking story because once again a 24 hour news station is trying to boost their ratings by horrifying the animal rights lobby and making chinese people seem barbaric. Shame on you all. China is a poor country, ergo their zoo's aren't well equiped. Improving the conditions of animals there would be a good thing. China also has many coal mines in which many men die every year. Improving the conditions of Chinese miners would also be a good thing, DON'T YOU THINK? MAYBE THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES OUT THERE. What was worst about this report was making the tiger feeding into some barbaric act. People let's remember, ANIMALS EAT ANIMALS. That's the way it's supposed to happen. These tigers will at least know how to kill if their habitat is ever safe enough for them to return to. I will be very surprised if my comments are posted, my e-mail was rejected, and all comments on this page follow the same line, the tiger feeding generated the response intended from animal cuddlers. Any slaugtherhouse in the UK will have terrified animals waiting to die, they can sense what's coming and being eaten by a tiger is no worse.

I felt sick after watching this but thank Sky News for bringing this disgace to the world's eyes. But what is the worst is perhaps the sickening culture of the Chinese, the lack of morals, and the sheer absence of any compassion while they cheered on the dying cows and chicken while the tigers ripped them to shreds. How can they get away with this? Why are our leaders still shaking their hands and doing deals with them behind the scenes? Wouldn't it shock this sick 'nation' if the entire tourist bus was emptied into the arena.

Not only is it extremely evil to even consider subjecting helpless innocent creatures to this disgusting cruelty, but the fact that these "ignorant" people are laughing and enjoying this display with their children as if it were Disney on Ice is beyond belief. In this day and age it is a disgrace to think that certain areas of the world are so medieval in their practices and are allowed to continue in such a disgusting way. Now that this subject has a main stage through Sky News can something be done on a global scale to put a stop to this? There should be a petition set up to put pressure on our Governments to abolish this. What type of world are we living in that brings children up in China to think that this is "exciting family fun"? WHAT SICKENS ME EVEN MORE IS THE FACT THAT THE OLYMPICS WILL BE HELD THERE NEXT YEAR. WHO WERE THE MORONS WHO VOTED FOR CHINA? THEY ARE JUST AS SICK!

I have just seen this footage for the first time and what takes place in these so-called 'zoos' is nothing short of an absolute disgrace. What an appalling state of affairs that the Chinese people can find nothing better to amuse themselves with other than this appalling form of 'entertainment'. I cannot comprehend how parents can bring young children to watch such barbaric activities, and how anyone could actually enjoy such a grotesque spectacle. Something must be done by the wider international community to put an end to such deplorable and primative behaviour

Absolutely horrific. google 'Boycott China' there is already a website.
Posted by: Gillian, London 22 May 2007 17:28:13
I agree that the images are horrific - however I also feel there should be a debate over zoos generally ! We should tolerate other's cultures, and understand that although we have a value set which includes being kind to fluffy mammals - wheras the Chinese do not ! Its a bit hypocritical when some of us enjoy Lobster (Killed during Cooking) Oysters (Killed during opening) and Fois Gras (An appalling abuse of Geese !)
Should we Judge ?

I have never ever felt the need to comment on news matters before but the article I have just seen on Sky News about China's Zoo's and the absolute barbaric way in which these so called civilised people are behaving is beyond belief.
I have just found a contact address for the Chinese Consulate in the UK and I will be making my feelings known to them and urge everyone else to do the same.

I as a english born citizen am totally against animal torture and furthermore against this zoo in China.
However, many of the rituals and barbaric games that exist concerning animals in these countrys, are a symbol of a culture and heritage, for example, eating dogs is normal in china, where as we keep them as domestic pets. It is not for the UK to go around the world telling other cultures, how and what we belive are the correct ways to live, this is the point i fear sky news does not put across!!

How do we expect things in China to change when Tesco a major UK company now sell live animals to their customers in china. Live turtles are being sold by Tesco in China. They allow their customers in China to take away the turtle and butcher it alive at home. There is no humane way to kill a turtle, Tesco have dropped all of our UK animal welfare values to gain popularity and profit in China. If we really want to change things in China, we have to start at home by stopping Tesco farming, selling and butchering live animals in China. If you want to know more go to http://www.turtlesco.com and see what our own UK companies are doing in China. We should be educating, not lowering our standards to a minimum just to gain profit.

How could anyone do that to those poor animals...how could anyone go to see it done....
This world is full of sickos!!
There needs to be something done about this cruelty thats going on and it needs to be done NOW!!
As for the poor bear in the dress....its vile....how could they be so evil to it!!

There is animal cruelty to a degree all over the world but this footage from China was absolutly horrifying. What lessons and values are these people teaching their children? Cruelty thats what! People may argue this happens in the wild but the prey animal at least has a chance of a fair escape and the hunter is only after the animal because it is hungry. It is not a natural way for tigers to feed. In the wild they would hunt alone and only when hungry, the kill would also be quick and not a game.I do not believe these animals are to be released to the wild for a second. They are there to be slaughtered at a later date for use in superstious stupid chinese medicine. Do they have any proof of wild releases? I bet they don't.Its time to help all the animals in China, including the dogs and bears. Please let the public know what organisations are leading the fight against cruelty to animals in China.

I am an fan of the programme Monkey Business, - they go to all these places and make a difference by helping chimps in need, and I just hope that something similar can be done about this, so none of these animals in china zoo have to suffer anymore!

I wouldn't go to China if they paid me, even though I would love to go to Wolong to see the pandas.
God help anyone who's thinking of going to the Olympics next year. I wonder what the sideshows of that will turn up.....I'd rather not think about that either.
I wish we could all make a difference and get the Chinese to realise we find their exploitation of animals, people etc. unethical. Not much chance but let's live in hope.

I remember saying to myself 'Well, this changes everything' when I heard reports of the (literal) crushing of democracy demonstrators under tanks in Tiananmen Square in the 1980s. Of course, sadly, it changed NOTHING in the West's cosying relation with China. It seems the West only respects power; less powerful countries would have been isolated. So the zoo-prisons, medecine and fur trade aren't so much of a surprise. I wonder how can a such a powerful country with no tradition of human rights ever be induced (and by who?)to begin to respect its animals.
Posted by: Greg, Montpellier, France 22 May 2007 15:01:16
Who can blame the Chinese for treating their animals so badly?
Posted by: Nicholas Tsun 22 May 2007 14:37:52
This sadistic and sickening entertainment using defenseless animals is unacceptable in the 21st century! Can the Chinese honestly call themselves civilised enjoying such appalling cruelty to animals? Is this what they are going to show visitors during the Olympics? I am definitely not buying any more Chinese food or products until China proves to the rest of the world that they treat animals humanely!

I think the real reason behind this is that most of these tigers will be bred for "traditional" medicine and I am sure there will be a belief that this will make the dismember beast into a more powerful aphrodisiac for inadequate ill educated men to use.

I found the images shocking and horrendous and find it sad in this day and age, this kind off cruelty still goes on to provide cheap thrills in order to entertain people.
It's right that this footage has been shown to bring this awful cruelty to light, but I am disturbed though that Sky are happy to show this footage every 15 minutes to seemingly boost it's own ratings

I have been thoroughly, thoroughly depressed all day after seeing the horrific footage that Sky captured. For the Chinese to take advantage of a creature's vulnerability and suffering for their own entertainment is beyond barbaric. It was no easier watching the footage, than had it been a child being fed alive to the tigers. Absolutely disgusting. I will never be able to get those images out of my head. What can we do about it, because something MUST be done - this has been going on for too long already. Can any politicians or public figures become involved? We will all be behind them in stopping this. China should be ashamed of itself. I'm certainly ashamed to be a 'human' right now.

I am absolutely disgusted at what I have just seen. This country is about to host the Olympics. Perhaps all the competitors should be shown this and the cruel treatment of dogs and cats and they may reconsider. What is the matter with these people to enjoy watching such pain and suffering?! We should boycott the Olympics and cease trading with this country until it improves it animal welfare.
Posted by: Chrissie 22 May 2007 12:46:06
This video footage is just the tip of the ice burg and many other outrages go on in China. For example dogs having their skin ripped off them while they are still alive and screaming all so that we in the west can enjoy a nice furry trim on our collars. How can we expect people to have pity for animals when they have none for other people. The only way to stop this diabolical cruelty is to boycot anything made in this country.

I've been to Harbin zoo, my friend and I went to visit last year.
The tigers you have seen are the lucky ones, we saw pens with nearly five or six locked up in each.
The staff believe they are increasing the Siberian Tiger population and preparing them for re-release to the wild, they don't understand why westerners feel so upset by these acts.

I too, watched this report this morning. I wish I could say I was surprised, but I not. This country's human and animal right abuse is widely known about. We as a so-called civilised society should be doing more to put pressure on them to change their ways.
Their behaviour disgusts me. Surely there is something else we as a nation can do than simply say how awful we find this ?

I am horrified and saddened by the footage shown on sky news. It is evident that China has not moved forward despite being the hosting nation of the Olympic. For a moment there, I had a slim hope the Olympic could bring a fresh start for China and its citizens, but now its just wasted.

Posted by: Jean Dublin 22 May 2007 12:10:35
Yes, it's horrendous but nothing in the report surprised me much.
China also sell cats and dogs in markets to be eaten.
They are also the main culprate in the wild tigers population in the world being so close to complete extension with their attraction of tiger skins and bones, etc for medicinal purposes.
The Western world has done nothing to stop this, we're much more interested in the economic opportunities in China rather than their respect of basic human and animal rights.
Sad and pathetic...

I would just like to say that after reading the comments above, i am very moved that people have found this footage disturbing and upsetting. we live in a society where animals are still looked upon as second class, whether its this type of footage, or fur wearing etc, and its really positive to witness this type of reaction. I believe countries all over the world should stand together and fight this type of barbaric treatment of animals, and i believe our government should cut any ties with other countries (especially china) that still insist on acting lilke complete and utter sadistic lunatics. I am saddened and disturbed that barbaric and evil animal cruelty continues year after year and my son is shocked at the fact people can laugh and enjoy watching a living, breathing, feeling animal being tortured and killed. My son actually cried watching this report and has unfortunately now begun to learn that there are dispicable people in this world, something I wish I could protect him from. I think this is a disgusting way to treat these animals, if the Chinese are not eating the tigers they are showing their children how to be cruel and torment animals. I expect if one of them was thrown out of a lorry to be fed to the tigers they would think it was a big joke, maybe they might start using there orphan girls to feed to the tigers, this treatment should be stopped.

People who would pay to personally send an animal to it's death are a danger to society. Surely you have to be mentally ill to condone the needless suffering of animals.
To take the life of anything in the name of family fun leads me to think that these people would not think twice about hurting other people.
